Whether you are new to yoga or have been studying and practicing for years, our courses will help you develop an ever-deepening understanding of yoga philosophy and the spiritual practices of yoga. Srividyalaya is designed to illumine, inspire, and nourish your experience as a yogin by bringing you directly and deeply into the conversations of tradition, history, practice, and understanding.

For over a decade Dr. Douglas Brooks has been committed to teaching with authenticity and honesty Rajanaka Yoga Philosophy and the greater history of Indian philosophy, yoga, and particularly the complex traditions of Tantra. Srividyalaya represents a new kind of learning experience, a spiritual university on-line, dedicated to extending that process of learning by offering a systematic and ongoing curriculum of courses.

Each course consists of lectures delivered by Dr. Douglas Brooks, a study guide to accompany each lecture, and access to our Srividyalaya Facebook group where you will be able to ask questions, share insights, and converse with other course participants.

With Srividyalaya we hope to create an opportunity for a lifetime of learning in a living conversation.

Our Archived Courses are available anytime you are ready to dive into the ocean of yoga. Each of these courses is complete and ready for download via a personal thumb-drive that will be mailed directly to you.

CC102: An Introduction to the History and Practices of Yoga

In this course, we begin with the history and development of Yoga as it originates in India and work through the texts, traditions, and resources as they evolve chronologically. Our study includes readings from The Veda, the Upanishads, the early voices of Yoga as they appear in Buddhism, Jainism, and Patanjali’s Classical Yoga through the developments of the schools of Vedanta and eventually Tantra. This is our course in the foundations, the essentials, and the historical development and is recommended for everyone.

CC201: Ganesha Puja: Crossing the Threshold of Tantric Understanding and Practice

In this course we study the iconography, mythology, and symbolism of Ganesha, the elephant-headed god who is both the remover and the creator of obstacles. We also dive deeply into the traditions of mantra and yantra that form the essential basis of Tantric understanding and the threshold practices of ritual, meditation, and contemplation.

CC202: Tantrism: History, Teachings, and Practices

This course examines the origins and developments of Tantra. We look at a wide array of expressions of Tantra, from alchemy to contemplative mysticism, probing into the essential teachings to trace the developments of traditions such as Kashmir Shaivism and the Shakta goddess-centered Shrividya.

CC203: Siva Sutra, Book I

The Siva Sutra is perhaps the single most important resource for understanding the cosmology, teachings, and practices of Kashmir Shaivism and its legacy in Shakta Tantrism. This course will present an overview of Book One of the Siva Sutra paying close attention to the commentaries of Kshemaraja and Bhaskara.

CC204: Mantra Theory

In Mantra Theory we start with Vedic concepts of mantra and work our way historically through some of the most illuminating and important teachings of the Tantra. This course explains in detail the theory of Vac, the goddess who is Voice, as well as the practice of seed-mantra or bija as a Tantric practice.

C205: An Introduction to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, Book I

The Yoga Sutra is founded upon a worldview to which few modern yogis would ascribe and yet offers a valuable compendium of advice and practices, drawn from diverse traditions, which are still effective and useful today. This course offers and introduction to the Samadhi Pada, the first book of Patanjali’s treatise on yoga. We will examine the traditional commentators’ understandings of the text and then explore how these great teachings might be of relevance to us as modern yogis.

CC301: The Bhagavadgita, Part I

Poised between two great armies arrayed for battle, Arjuna, the great, shining archer of the Mahabharata, questions his duty and collapses in his chariot with his eyes filled with tears. And there in the mid-line, in the moment before the battle, taking pause on the Field of Dharma he receives the teachings of Krsna in the form of The Song of the Blessed One—The Bhagavadgita. In this course we will begin our study of The Gita with Chapters One through Six. We will follow close readings of the traditional commentaries of Sankara, Ramanuja and Abhinavagupta as well as draw from the oral traditions of the late South Indian Sakta Tantra tradition of Rajanaka Yoga.

CC401: Key Concepts in Yoga Philosophy

This course examines some of the fundamental concepts needed to gain a basic understanding of Yoga Philosophy. The lectures focus primarily on the concepts of moksa, karma, maya, dharma, and yoga while pulling these ideas through the history and variety of yogic schools.

CC402: Tattva Theory

What is the nature of the universe? What is it that we are experiencing when we have an experience? This course will examine some of the ways the traditions of Yoga have sought to answer these questions through the concept of The Tattvas as they emerge in Sankhya Yoga and are then further developed by the traditions of Kashmir Saivism.

CC403: Mapping the Subtle Body

While there is much talk of the Subtle Body in modern yoga, there is no one single theory of what “Subtle Body” might mean. In this course we will examine some of the various historical ways that the subtle body has been envisioned by the traditions of yoga and examine how the early views have led to our modern understandings of these esoteric traditions.

CC404: Krishna Stories

Whether pictured as the baby butter thief who holds the universe in his mouth or dancing the Rasa Lila with his beloved Radha, the stories of Krsna enchant us even as they reveal us to ourselves. In this course we will examine the myths of Krsna, gazing into his mouth and finding ourselves.

CC501: Durga, Empowering Yourself in a Challenging World

We live in a world that is simultaneously offering us the opportunity to thrive and devouring us. Using the lens of Durga, the goddess whose very name means “rough going”, this course will explore how we can not only live and subsist in such a world, but how we can seize the opportunities of yoga in such a way as to thrive. This course is the first in a new series of courses at Srividyalaya that will couple the serious scholarship of our previous courses with the conversational qualities of a live seminar.

This course includes:

  • 5 hours and 45 minutes of downloadable audio lecture files (mp3′s)
  • 2 downloadable dharanas (meditations) based on the teachings
  • An 80-page study guide to accompany the lecture files

Tuition for this course is $150.

Just how do these courses work?

Each Srividyalaya course is now offered as personal thumb-drive of mp3 files sent directly to you. In this format you will have unlimited access to downloading the materials. Upon the completion of your registration you will receive and official enrollment notification as well as an invitation to join our Facebook group. A word about the downloadable lecture files and study guides. We must insist that the Srividyalaya lecture files and study guides not be shared outside of the registered course participants. This is not a withholding of the teachings but merely a reality of the transmission of the teachings in this way. While you are welcome to continue to listen to and enjoy this conversation and all of the material related to this course for as long as you desire, ownership of these legally protected files does remain with Srividyalaya/Douglas Brooks and so we must insist that you not copy, publish, transmit, distribute, or modify the downloadable lecture files or study guides in any way. Thank you for your understanding.

How do I register?

The Registration process is really pretty simple. Just send us an email at svcourses@gmail.com containing the name of the course in which you are interested, your contact information, your preferred email, and your preferred means of payment. (We accept tuition payments by check, money order, and through PayPal.) Once we have received your email we will confirm your payment and send you the materials on a USB thumbdrive that will allow you to download the course directly.

How long do I have access to your course files?

Once you have registered for a course, the course files and study guides are yours to use to for as long as the conversation holds your interest. There are no time limits. There is no homework. There is only the conversation that moves us ever more deeply into our own hearts and minds. Join us on Facebook for the Srividyalaya Group, just drop Douglas a personal FB message.

Can I share my lectures with my friend?

We encourage you to live the teachings of yoga in the world, but your Srividyalaya course files are for you alone. We must insist that you not share your course lecture files or study guides with anyone not enrolled in the course. Making the teachings available in this way takes a tremendous effort. Your not sharing your lecture files or study guides will help us to keep making these teachings available for years to come.

Is it possible to study with Douglas live?

Absolutely! You can find Douglas’s travel schedule both on this site and at www.rajanaka.com. In addition to his travel schedule, we also host two Rajanaka Summer Camps each year near Douglas’s home in the mountains of Bristol, NY.
